As one might expect from a journalist and one has to respect the bravery and resourcefulness of any Mexican journalist given the risks implicit in this profession, particularly those investigating drug crime and political corruptionthis is a detailed account of those involved in the business, ricarxo is perhaps more a descriptive account rather than an analytical one.
Analysis is present where Ravelo turns his ravlo to the shifting power relationships and how cartels adapted themselves to the actions of successive governments, but perhaps it is lacking in this regard ravrlo to other books of a similar premise.
The control of the different plazas and drug routes is key to understanding intracartel and cartel-governmental relationships and this is a strength of the book. Political failures and corruption are sadly prevalent as one would expect.
ricarxo No solutions are really presented for solving the problem however, but then again, this is not the aim of the book, this is an account, not an analysis. His first chapter focuses on the rise to power as Attorney General of the first military man to hold this position, General Macedo de la Concha. So what does this book lack?
Academics caops rightly point to a lack of sources cited by Ravelo and at times readers who have read deeply in this area would want more specific accounts of events, quantities and the detailed mechanics of the drug trade. These are quibbles but minor ones, as much can be learned from this worthy and well-informed book.
