His mother, though ill and devout to her Catholicism, still has the power to comfort and confuse her children. This is typical of Fante’s novels, it’s autobiographical, and brimming with love, death, violence and religion. Like most if not all of Fante’s works it’s basically auto-biographical, but in this book he’s an old fart. Who really gives a shit about old farts? I mean, he’s not even a dirty old bastard of an old fart like his friend Bukowski.
He’s just some normal old guy. Don’t read this one unless you read ‘Wait Until Spring, Bandini’ or ‘Ask the Dust’ and decide that it’s a moral imperative that you read everything Fante ever wrote. That’s what happened to me. Arruguew I ended up This book is pretty good. Then I ended up reading books about old farts. Nov 20, Brent Legault rated it liked it. Lacks the lustre of his earlier, ballsier novels, but still shines brighter than the many dim bulbs dulling the wrrugues of the bookshops and liibro homes and the few remaining public libraries within this country and others.
For Fante-ites only, I believe. Jan 21, Aurora rated it liked it Libor Una bella sagra familiare, che ha per protagonisti un gruppo di italo-americani visti dai loro vicini come una banda di ubriaconi sempre pronti alla rissa.

La cucina, the true mother country, this warm cave of the good witch deep in the desolate land of loneliness, with pots of sweet potions bubbling over arrugkes fire, a cavern of magic herbs, rosemary and thyme and sage and oregano, balm of lotus that brought sanity to lunatics, peace to troubled, joy to the joyless, this small twenty-by-twenty world, the altar a kitchen range, the magic circle a checkered tablecloth, where the children fed, the old children, lured back to their beginni “The kitchen.
Beguiled and voracious Virgil filled his cheeks with gnocchi and eggplant and veal, and flooded them down his gullet with the fabulous grape of Joe Musso, spellbound, captivated, mooning over his great mother, enrapturing her with loving glances, pausing midst his greed to lift her hand and kiss it gratefully.
She laughed to see how completely she had woven her spell, and while they stared like haunted lovers I slipped into the parlor and telephoned Harriet in Redondo Beach.
Gostei do enredo do livro e da perspectiva do autor. Enfim muito mau, ao ponto de qualquer leitor comum o conseguir detectar. Jan 24, Andrew rated it liked it. A story about how a 50 something year old man deals with his elderly parents. Henry Molise is an author living hundreds of miles from his family who live in a small Cailfornian town, He receives a phone call from his brother saying that his parents are getting divorced, they are in their 70’s and been married for 50 plus years.
In a comic opening chapter his parents are described as being locked out of the local police station following which Henry agrees to return. The book then describes his re A story about how a 50 something year old man deals with his elderly parents.
The book then describes his relationship with his traditional Italian parents with much alcohol, food and battling. Not a bad read with a good depiction of a man coming to terms with his parents decline and some humour although a very odd sexual encounter towards the end which didn’t seem to me to be explainable.

This is basically a “father-son” book, and a lesser writer could easily have turned this same story into something completely tiresome – but Fante writes well, and here he’s often funny, reflective, humble, and humane. Mostly he’s kind of a sad-sack, though. But it works, and the writing arruyues is occasionally lbiro and moving. Nov 06, Tibbe rated it liked it.
Dec 20, Jessica rated it liked it. Fante never fails to disappoint and he has a truly kooky kind of humor. The recurring theme of attacking crabs: I don’t understand why this occurs in his books but it is very funny. And this book in particular is heavy on the Italian-American immigrant humor: Feb 15, Minni rated it liked it.
Nadie como Fante para describir lo que significa ser parte de una familia; ser hijo, ser hermano y seguramente ser padre. Con eso basta para que sea un libro memorable.
Apr 24, Tom Ward rated it liked it. Not the book I thought it was going to be, but still a fantastic work. It contains some of the best lines Fante has written, ‘We cried in each other’s arms, over the telephone. Apr 17, Jay C rated it liked it. Pretty good with some great writing, but the subject matter was not for me.
Relationship between the main character and his father and family was just too much of a downer. Sep 16, Gonzalo R rated it liked it. Sep 10, Brett rated it liked it.
