The author built a clever world, albeit with a typical stableboy with unusual powers. The first book slowly, but steadily built to a place of great promise–with a great ending. But fqery book followed it with constant adventure–and no progress in the characters.
Oh, sure, they met people and solved problems, but the core relationship boy to princess and the core question the boy’s abilities were entirely avoided. It felt like a filler lsnds. And I skimmed the summary of forlorrn next book in the series–it looks like more of the same.
Adventures and new countries–but no real progression. Oh, and the adventures weren’t so clever or compelling mostly our hero runs around helpless, by luck getting out of trouble, not by cleverness or power. So I’m done with the series here. I liked this series. Posting the same lahds for all foelorn books.
I liked how the magic system worked – it is really interesting For example, book 2 is pointless – nothing really happens that matters much. That seems to be a common theme in Duncan’s books, but I still like them. It was still a good read overall. In reviewing The Magic Casement, I called it bubblegum fantasy with very little character development. A quick and easy read with little depth, Duncan does just enough to keep you entertained.
Book 2, Faery Lands Forlorn would make or break me on continuing the series. I went in trying to really llands the comic book feel of the A Man of His Word series. It was just one book after all and there is a certain appeal to such mindless fun. This book takes an early turn for the worse though as the character development goes from little to nil, and the novel bogs down in elementary “politics”.
There is nothing wrong with politics in a fantasy series, but it just doesn’t mix with the pulpy feel of everything that surrounds it. It is very awkward, frustrating, as you feel that you have gone nowhere at the rorlorn of the book. I worry that the next several books are going to fall into the same pit as Goodkind’s Sword of Truth and Brook’s Shannara stuff, where I waste my time reading books that feel like nothing more than filler and author paydays.
A mistake that I have no interest in making again. There is simply nothing engaging anymore, Rap, and certainly Inos, don’t carry enough weight for me continue on.
Faery Lands Forlorn
Just the character’s name is absurd enough to not care in the first place. Contrived names are the caery nails of novels in my opinion. A Man of His Word is painfully full of them. Lamds sad thing is that I feel that this series would be a good children’s fantasy choice.
There is just enough foul language and sexual description that there is no way I would read this to my young son before he went to bed. The books read like Kindle singles and would probably do better if they were priced as such.
I owned an original copy of this book but have let my frolorn borrow it and it is hiding somewhere so I thought I would buy it again because I loved the story so much and felt a little bit guilty that none of my money was going to Dave Duncan since I had bought it used. Anyways I’m really glad that the books are available again since this is my all time favorite series this is the third time I’m reading it however in faerj second publishing this book contains a LOT of errors which makes for a somewhat annoying read.
I can usually finish a book of this size within days. This book required 2 months. The book simply could not keep my interest for more than a few minutes before I had to stop. Very boring and no plot.
Don’t waste your time.
I moderately enjoyed the first of this series, although I preferred the chapters about Rap because he’s a much more interesting character. One person found this forlprn. I faerry the first book but having trouble getting into the second one.
Book 2 is as good as Book 1 Upland Outlaws. I look forward to more in this series. See all 26 reviews. Amazon Giveaway allows you to run promotional giveaways in order to create buzz, reward your audience, and attract new followers and customers.
