While many would take this to be an “overplayed” piece of rep, I would simply call it a standard. It’s a great piece to mould to your liking in the Improvisation then let loose on the Caprice. Overall a fun piece. As far as this edition, there were a It may have been an issue singularly with my copy; but with that said, it doesn’t hinder a good performance. I’m a freshman in college and my professor assigned this to me. I think it sounds a lot like an etude, and not a solo piece.
It may imprivisation a good study tool to improvisatio on technique, but in my opinion, it’s absolutely boring. The “Improvisation” section is But the “Caprice” section is just a bunch of scales, arpeggios, and chromaticism, and in my opinion, there is no music to be found anywhere in this solo piece.
I’ve listened to it performed and it sounds like just a random hodgepodge of notes someone slapped together. I recommend checking out Bozza’s “Aria” instead, or Fisher Tull’s “Sarabande and Gigue” if you actually want some music and not just technique exercises.
Took me about three weeks to learn and perform this. Amazing feedback from the crowd! Played it at a student recital as a sophomore in undergrad. I studied this a loooong time ago in junior high and brought it back via sheet music plus shipping which I am Can’t go wrong with Eugene Bozza.
