This is an excellent book giving an honest account of how fieldwork often doesn’t go as planned. My graduate school mentor gave me this book years ago after she read it, and I’m upset it took me this long to read it! The book Nigel Barley isn’t sure he wants to do actual fieldwork as an anthropologist, but since it seems to be expected, and he’s got nothing else ell interesting to nlgel, he goes to Africa to study the culture of the Dawayo people.
Not only is it the way to know a particular place and culture in depth, but it helps antropologk to understand how all those other works lining the shelves of college libraries were brought to fruition. It is positively insulting how well the world functions without one.
