Sam, the dictator of Kangan; the newspaper editor guy whose name I can’t remember right this second; and Chris, the Minister for Information. Sunday represents those docile semi illiterate Africans who serve the Europeans saannah Americans diligently.

There is no doubt that Anthills of the Savannah centres on the art of governance. Anthills of Savannah is a story of a nation facing the political conundrum of a new found independence. For denying them their right to water, the people of Abazon visit the Presidential Palace to claim their rights but Major Sam sees their legitimate demand as an act of insurrection that needs to be nipped in the bud.
The next day, the BBC correspondent who has granted Chris an interview is deported but the Student Union has already taken up the case demanding the immediate dismissal of Major Ossai and judicial inquiry into the death of Ikem. Tensions escalate through the novel, culminating in the assassination of Ikem by the regime, the toppling and death of Sam and finally the murder of Chris.
He was Ikem’s headmaster back in the primary school. There was a message there, I know, but whatever it was I didn’t fully grasp it. Although the rulers were no longer European, and although they were a lot closer to the people than their European predecessors, they fairly soon distanced themselves from the people. He is an intellectual in government who still retains his sense of honour and morality even in a corrupt and wanton regime like the type we see in Anthills.
This is a curious one — it begins so intriguingly like the best of political satires, and ends as a bundle of cliches and unambiguous ambiguities. He is also a radical individual who is able to connect with the masses and affect social revolution.
