We are probably one session away from ending this first adventure and both me and my players love it. There is enough interesting and potentially interesting NPCs and empty hooks for the DM me to take ownership of the game and really make it my own while still providing a solid structure and story and gaming experience.

I am looking forward to the second book which I already purchased.

This is my first ever module and the first time I have tried Pathfinder. Our group is officially making the switch from 3.

Pathfinder #25: The Bastards of Erebus (Council of Thieves 1 of 6)

I was the first to buy the Core book, and now two other people have it ordered. All in all, I have to say that I was slightly skeptical when I picked up the first installment to the new Pathfinder campaign series. I am a fan of the writer, Sean K. Reynolds, but this adventure did not appear to be the usual stuff. Boy was I right.

The first installment to the campaign series “The Bastarrs of Erebus” is set in the aging city of Westcrown, a shadow of a once-great capital city.

The adventurers are quickly put on a collision course with the political events of the day, and have to determine where they stand, whom they favor, and what they are going to do about it. Overall, the book is roughly divided into thirds.

The first is a erebys delve into Westcrown’s backstory and immediately sets the pervasive undertones that bring the city to life. The second is the adventure, itself divided into 6 pieces, and the third is an addendum including a small bestiary, details on Tiefling characters PC or NPCand some more out-of-game details.

Overall, the story quality is impressive. The background work is incredibly thorough, and there is great character developement. In fact, there are no less than a dozen NPCs that could become quite close to the PC characters, and those with a penchant for role playing will find excellent opportunities here.

In fact, the game timeline could advance a mere few days to a couple years depending on the players’ approach the adventure.

The adventure has an open-ended feel so that GMs and players who oc to truly explore the environment could take quite a bit of time exploring the 6 parts of this adventure plot. A note here–the adventure is not quite for the faint of heart. If erebjs GM ran this adventure like a crunchy dungeon-hack then the entire module could possibly be completed in a couple sessions, but those who prefer a balance of roleplaying, combat, and weaving plots will find some excellent surprises here as combats are not always straight forward and players are sometimes offered the opportunity to choose the field of battle and define their own tactics.

It may sound shocking that I found 96 pages a little light on delivery to the players because there is so much detail that GMs could miss if they ran the adventure in too much a hurry. This is not a module where every spoken word is detailed–the motivations and scenarios are usually detailed instead, so for the most part the GM must decide what to reveal, who says what, and how quickly events unfurl. I for one can’t wait for part 2.
