Reading ‘The lion and the unicorn’ for the first time is a peculiar experience, not only for its ambivalence but also the opening section ‘England your England’ which still chimes with the sentiments of our English Trump to quote according to Ben Rhodes – Barack Obamanamely Boris Univornio, and his full English Brexit and the distinctiveness of ‘English civilization’ – a nation apart.
In this he has some fascinating insights into English culture, some of which t to me to have stood the test of time.
I did read this book somewhat slowly, considering the length of it, but only because I wanted to fully understand and take in everything Orwell was saying. Paperbackpages. Orwell i Orwell’s writing is brilliant, and this book honestly appealed to both my history AND my politics side. This is an interesting historical artefact: Orwell is insightful and undogmatic which gives him the ability to be clear on all sides of his story, he doesn’t seem to be patriotic but he appreciates the power of English patriotism in keeping the country on a similar footing, he isn’t a warmonger but knows when a fight in this case against Hitler is unavoidable, and he is a leftest but knows when the left wing as it is today is in the throws of Moscow and unable to lead its own line of thought.
A random lucky find in the library as I had no idea there was a special publication. We socialists The revolution never did happen in England as Orwell predicted in this book that’s why I’ve only given it four stars but the book was informative and easy to understand.

Much discussion of Empire, to my knowledge now, woefully uninformed and patronising yes I know he worked with the Burma police and reminded me of focus group discussions prior to the referendum on our European membership where the elderly elderly I count myself in the single ‘elderly’ category talked of getting back to more trading with our empire ffs.
He would surely have concluded that it was a job half done I may find out if I ever get to the end of his vast collection of essays.
