They had to be perfectly “rational” in everything, very left-brained, clinical, methodical, no room lessinng emotion. Such a chilling book, makes you really question the purpose of marriage and everything related to it. Like the reader Susan is quite aware that these are symptoms of madness. I also felt frustrated with her, because I can only empathize with her feelings, not being able to say they are my own, but it is rather telling that this story can evoke so many emotions in just a few pages that some very long drawn out novels can never hope to tap dance near.

Matthew needs the rational explanation of a lover to understand his wife’s distress; she invents one for his sake. Everywhere on the mountains, where she met no one at all, from breakfast time to dusk, excepting sheep, or a shepherd, she came face to face with her own craziness, which might attack her in the broadest valleys, so that they seemed too small, or on a mountain top from which she could see a hundred other mountains and valleys, so that they seemed too low, too small, with the sky pressing down too close.

Lessing was one I remember as having a strong impact and I think it was the story of this books’s title – “Room 19” that resonated with me so much. There is no way to win this game.
