Conn Iggulden is one of the most successful authors of historical fiction writing today. Looking for beautiful books? In this book the author does a great job portraying the youth of the future Dictator of Rome and his fictional best friend Marcus. Another example is in the beginning of the book we are introduced to Brutus and Caesar as being both eight years old when in actuality, Caesar is 15 years Brutus’ senior.
Though Iggulden has a solid grounding in Roman military history, anachronisms in speech and attitude “Cabera took him outside and gave him a hiding” roll underfoot and trip up authenticity. I love ancient Egypt, the pre-colonization civilizations of the Americas, any history after the Romans, just not the Romans or Greeks if I can group those two time periods together. In a note, Iggulden does mention that most of Julius Caesar’s childhood is a mystery to historians.
However, I don’t share the author’s love of describing appendix operations or arm removal in absolute detail, with every drop of blood or tendon being cut and scream of pain.

Iggulden lingers long over boyhood pranks, trying the reader’s patience; the pace picks up only halfway through the novel.
